Fortvi lle is in northwest Hancock County, less than a half-hour's drive to downtown Indianapolis via I-69. And like we said, it's not a town known for nightlife and a fast-paced lifestyle. It's a quiet town where you can take in the scenic countryside in your back yard; where you can spend time with the kids at one of the town's two parks; where you can enjoy one of a number of locally-owned restaurants, with a cuisines ranging from traditional American diner to Italian to Chinese to nouvelle cuisine to pub fare. Regardless of your choice, it's going to be a casual, relaxing day or night.

One of the happenings in Fortville has been the annual By Air, By Rail Festival. This is a very unique celebration of, well, transportation … all things transportation. It's a spectacle in itself, featuring virtual reality tours, flight simulators, model airplane and model train displays and demonstrations, LEGO models (whee!), powered parachutes and hot air balloons, along with booths for and by local businesses, live music and artists producing and displaying their works. Someone described the By Air, By Rail Festival as something that can't be compared to any Indianapolis festival. We'll have to ask if that's a good thing or not.

In Winter, there's also the Winter Festival, when Fortville becomes a magical place, with sparkling lights, decorated trees, costumed characters, holiday music, horse-drawn carriage rides, choirs and a Christmas market, plus a live nativity scene, hot cocoa, great food and Santa.

Question for the locals: what's the deal with the pink elephant?
